Salem Baptist Church - submitted by Elaine White Salem Baptist Church was organized in 1867. The land was obtained from Dolphus McMillan(a black Man). The first pastor was R. G. Barrett in 1868. Williams, Alice Williams, Barbara Ward, Rebecca Warran, Alma Williams. Services were held on Saturday before fourth Sunday and on fourth Sunday morning at that time. This was changed to Sunday in 1914. The first recorded minister to be ordained was B. E. Phillips in May, 1910. The first church building was built in 1911. The building was torn down July ,1951, and the new church built in 1951-52. Rev. B. E. Phillips preached the dedication service on the third Sunday in May, 1952. The first fellowship hall was built in 1969. At this time, the first indoor plumbing was also done. Later, the bathroom was moved and an additional one was build. In 1984, the fellowship hall was coverted to Sunday School rooms and a new building was build to house the fellowship hall, library and pastor’s study. The church became full time in Feb.1981.WMU, Acteens, RA’s & Missions Friends were organized and began meeting in January, 1984. A few of first pastors were: R. G. Barrett, M. B. Maum and W. S. Rushing. Some other churches in the area: Rocky Point Methodist Church was established as early as 1850 and was moved to Barnes in 1934. St. Ann Church was located in Leake County before it was destroyed by fire in 1966.
